Physical Dimensions vs. Physical Product Dimensions

In laymen's terms (I manage a group of users, not system admins), what is the difference between Physical Dimensions and Physical Product Dimensions in Product information management > Products > Released products? If you were doing an implementation right now, what would you tell people to setup with these two screens and what is the rationale for this?
I have the same question (0)

    Hi,

The Physical dimensions are used for the default storage dimensions of a product. The Physical product dimensions can be used for differences in storage, packing, or nested packing. It is an override on the Physical dimensions.

A pillow or mattress can be compressed in the package, where out of the package, it has larger physical dimensions. In the warehouse, you need less space, where if you e.g. have the pillow on a shelf in store, it will be the expanded. (I went to IKEA for a new mattress recently)

If I were explaining this to business users in Dynamics 365 Supply Chain, I'd keep it simple:

Physical Dimensions represent the actual size and weight of the product.
Physical Product Dimensions represent the size and weight of the product when it is packed, stored, or handled in warehouse operations.

    Example: Bicycle
    • Physical Dimensions = The assembled bicycle weighs 15 kg and measures 180 × 60 × 100 cm.
    • Physical Product Dimensions = The same bicycle may have different dimensions when packed in a shipping carton or stored vertically in a warehouse.

This allows D365 to make better decisions for warehousing, storage capacity, packing, and transportation processes.

    My Recommendation
For most organizations, I recommend maintaining only Physical Dimensions initially. It is simpler to maintain and supports the majority of inventory and shipping requirements.

I would introduce Physical Product Dimensions only when the business has advanced warehouse requirements, such as:
    • Warehouse slotting and space optimization
    • Containerization and cartonization
    • Different storage and shipping dimensions
    • WMS-driven warehouse operations

    Thumb Rule
    • Physical Dimensions = What the product is.
    • Physical Product Dimensions = How the product is stored, packed, and moved through the warehouse.

In most implementations, keeping Physical Dimensions is sufficient. Physical Product Dimensions should be enabled only when there is a clear warehouse or logistics requirement that justifies the additional master data maintenance.

       Hi,

    Physical Dimensions
    • What they are: The actual weight (e.g., kg, lbs) and volume (length × width × height) of an item Set different dimensions for packing and storage.
    • Usage: Used to calculate shipping costs, warehouse storage capacity, and boxing logic Set different dimensions for packing and storage.
    • Location: Set in Released products > Manage inventory > Physical product dimensions.
    Physical Product Dimensions
    • What it is: A sub-feature under physical dimensions. It allows you to specify different physical measurements for different warehouse processes, like Packing vs Storage Set different dimensions for packing and storage
    • Usage: A folded shirt might need a small Packing dimension but a larger Storage dimension when sitting on a rack. Set different dimensions for packing and storage.

    Regards,
    Venkat
